The Soundtrack to...

6-month-montage

The only bad thing about music is there’s too much of it. Ok, and Nickelback. So ‘The Soundtrack to...’ series skims-off the cream of the month’s musical offerings and packages them up into palatable playlists, schizophrenic mishmashes, genre-embracing love-ins. All created to entertain, introduce and encourage exploration.

With the rise of digital music, have you noticed tastes have become more eclectic? Whip an iPod off your mate and you’ll discover a plethora of genres. An embarrassment of guilty pleasures and splatters of random genius. From every genre. ‘The Soundtrack to...’ stands astride this trend, not shying away from the poppiest pop or the hairiest rock. Averaging about three and a half hours, which isn’t a lot when you consider the amount of music released in a month, they serve as a soundtrack to the month and a tuneful time capsule for years to come.

For example, I wonder if you can remember what you were doing in October 2005? No idea? Ok, what were you doing when Arctic Monkeys released their debut single, 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'? Remember it splattered all over the radio? Bouncing across dance floors? Ah, now you remember what you were doing. Music has the clout to transport you back to the classroom, to a sweaty club night, to a beachside bar - in an instant. And one day, ‘The Soundtrack to...’ will be the musical motorcade to take you there. Maybe. (Smell can spark memories too but they’ve not yet harnessed the technology, when they do, we’ll get on it.)

In the meantime, please tuck in to ‘The Soundtrack to August.’ Like you, I love to hear tips and recommendations. So if anything wobbles your world, please let me know for future months. And on the playlists: are they too long? Aren’t they long enough? Should they be more eclectic Leave any comments on my blog (and here) which I’ll also try and keep up to date with the daily Soundtrack to... too.

The Soundtrack to March’ was the inaugural playlist and the first six months sound pretty juicy. Take a look at my profile where you’ll find the entire ‘The Soundtrack to...’ back catalogue and I’ll try and keep away from Nickelback.
