"July got its groove on," says Phil Wilce. He's not wrong. One look at the latest edition of his legendary monthly mixtape, The Soundtrack to July 2012, proves that. Here's a selection of our favourite tracks from this feast of new music.
Our favourite new(ish) track from this month's playlist comes from Nas, with The Don. One of the most gifted MCs of all-time is back on a monster production from Salaam Remi, Da Internz and the late Heavy D, over which he unloads his inimitable, commanding rat-tat-tat rhymes, addressing a near-peerless two decades in hip-hop.
alt-J's An Awesome Wave is one of our album's of the year so far. "'Til morning comes, let’s tessellate," Joe Newman coos, like a womanising mathematician, on the brilliant Tessellate. Think Bombay Bicycle Club produced by Massive Attack.
Maximo Park are back with a solid new album, The National Health. Frontman Paul Smith's missus is in a mood on one of the record's heavier tracks, Hips and Lips. "And I'm supposed to know," Smith howls in his now-familiar brougue, over a big riffs from guitarist Duncan Lloyd.
We're also feeling tracks by Hollie Cook, Cat Power, Jack White, Grizzly Bear, Chromatics, the Naked and Famous reworking of M83 and, well, pretty much everything else on here.
Long live the mixtape!
