Playlist reviews: Jamaica's Independence

Celebrations to mark Jamaica's 50th anniversary and musical heritage began this month. And we thought we'd join in the celebrations in the only way we know how – playlists. Here's a selection of our favourite new and classic playlists dedicated to Jamaica...

Jamaica goes soul

"Jamaica was deeply influenced by American R&B and soul," says Lutxo Pergnatore. "This playlist contains some of the finest adaptations of soul hits ever made in Jamaican music." We have to agree. Everyone from Alton Ellis and the Heptones to Phyllis Dillon and Delroy Wilson tackle soul classics here.

50 years of Island Records

Beginning life in Jamaica, Island Records went on to become one of the most influential labels of the 1970s. This brilliant playlist features tracks from artists spanning Island's 50 year history including Desmond Dekker & The Aces, Roxy Music, The Spencer Davis Group, Paul Weller and, lamentably, U2. Great playlist, though.

History of Jamaican Music

Our next playlist, created by Steven Marshall, went down a storm when we posted it on the old SMP Facebook page. This musical history of Jamaica spans folk, mento, calypso, ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall and ragga. An incredible collection of tunes exploring the island's vibrant music scene over the past 70 years.

Smile Jamaica

We end with a cracking creation from Daryl Fenton. He's put together the classic NME compilation from 1983, Smile Jamaica. Featured here: everyone from Lord Creator and Jimmy Cliff to Gregory Isaacs and Black Uhuru. A must-hear mixtape.

Long live the mixtape!
