Playlist reviews: featured playlists

A new week, a fresh batch of featured playlists: this week you lot are dreaming of England, tasting the sweeter side of pop, looking at all too familiar tunes and under the radar gems. Eyeballs south to check them out.

England, My England

"Political angst, quiet despair and novelty records. It's not simple, being English," says Ian Williams. That may be so. But it's hard to dispute England's overwhelming contribution to music as a result, which is what this playlist is all about. Everyone from The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Sham 69 to Morrissey and Metronomy feature here. (And it uses a picture of Alan Bennett as artwork – which scores extra points with us.)

Power Pops: Your Sugar Coated Music

If a pop playlist is worth doing, it's worth doing properly: "The seventies and sixties had some incredible power pop, but those aren't the only decades," says playlist creator Jayson Bradley. "Listen to this sugary goodness." There's over five hours of top – and not so top but equally fun – pop music here.

That Sounds A Lot Like...

"Coincidence?" asks agent3613. "Or rip-off?" That's the the question posed by this playlist: 50 newer songs that sound very similar to old tunes. Everyone from the Beach Boys, Chuck Berry and the Kinks, to Phoenix, Huey Lewis & the News and Ray Parker Junior.

Best 35 Songs You've Never Heard (Pt. 3)

From songs that sound familiar, to volume three of Chris Junkin's series of playlists dedicated to songs you've never heard before. Make sure you check out the Best 35 Songs You've Never Heard (Part 1, which has over 8500 subscribers on Spotify, and the Best 35 Songs You've Never Heard (Part 2). Brilliant stuff.

Long live the mixtape!
