RIP Richie Havens

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013 at 8:46pm by Will Moreland

Kind of like 'Who was the second man on the moon?' – the question 'Who opened Woodstock?' is one not everyone knows the answer to. But, knowledge is power. And those who do know the answer to the latter question will have experienced the power of the incredible body of work Richie Havens leaves behind. Havens died of a heart attack, this week, aged 72.

While the folk singer is, perhaps, best known for his opening performance at the iconic 1969 festival, if all had gone to plan he would have went on stage fifth on the bill. Major traffic congestion delayed many of the other artists arrival, so he was told go out first – and play for as long as he could.

Whether hardened fan or complete newcomer to Havens' work, this playlist tribute – created lovingly by SMP super user hoxsd1 – is the perfect best-of.

Classic Train Songs

Monday, April 22nd, 2013 at 7:43pm by Will Moreland

There's nothing quite like travelling by train. The slow, rhythmical chug. The scenery rolling by. The fellow passengers whose lives you'll never know. Yes, there's something about travelling by train that stirs creativity. At least, it does for these artists ...

"[Train travel's] impact on the culture of music – especially in the USA – is huge," says Jokke Samen. So much so that the SMP superuser has put together a collection of tracks that, in his expert opinion, are the best ever train songs.

Here you'll find stack of hits, lots of old classics, covering every from country and blues, to soul and funk, to reggae and rock – including Johnny Cash, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, the Kinks, the Monkees, Bob Dylan, Lonnie Donegan and more. Almost 100 tracks, spanning just under nine hours. A really interesting and well put together mixtape. Check it out.

Daytime Deep House

Friday, April 19th, 2013 at 7:46pm by Will Moreland

Day parties. They've got a different vibe to the club. To the night. The best ones take place in gardens, yards or on terraces. The dream ones take place on the beach. Shades are a must. Vests and shorts are essential. Flip flops, too. Drinks? Long cocktails. Ice-cold beers. And as for the music ... Well, day parties require a very special kind of music.

If there's one man who understands a good day party it's Reggie Prim. The SMP user, our resident dance music connoisseur, has put together a mixtape full of the finest daytime deep house.

"Good for night. Good for day. Good for work and good for play," goes the pithy playlist description. Highlights include big tunes and remixes from Kruse & Nuernberg, Mano Le Tough, Guti, Cesar Merveille, Anneke Van Giersbergen and many more besides. Brilliant, as always, from that man Prim.

Music like Daft Punk

Friday, April 19th, 2013 at 7:44pm by Will Moreland

New Daft Punk ... New Daft Punk! ... Have you heard the new Daft Punk?! It's like Michael Jackson meets Chic and it's actually got Nile Rodgers on it but it's also got Pharrell Williams on it and then it's got the Daft Punk filtery bits and those inimitable vocodery vocals and they're all wearing these amazing Saint Laurent Hedi Slimane suits and and and ...

So, Get Lucky, the new Daft Punk single: we thinks it's quite good, alright, passable. As does John Brophy, who's put this playlist together. The SMP user has arranged a collection of, "Tracks that sound a bit like Daft Punk to keep you going until the new album comes out!"

Almost 30 tracks – spanning just over two and a half hours – featuring everyone from Les Rythmes Digitales, Late Night Hustle and Digitalism to the Ting Tings, Pierre de la Touche and Aeroplane. Super stuff ... New Daft Punk!!!!

THE BEST OF DEEP HOUSE 2013 SO FAR

Friday, April 19th, 2013 at 7:44pm by Will Moreland

If you're not familiar with the work of Kasper Langendoen, allow us to introduce you: he's the SMP user who has established himself as our premier purveyor of deep house. So, when we saw he had curated a round up of the best tracks from the past 12 month, we had to give it some props.

"The best of deep house 2013 so far. Enjoy!!!" goes the succinct playlist description. And it delivers exactly what it promises. This year has been a phenomenal one for all quarters of electronic music, and the deeper, groovier, more soulful stuff is no exception.

Our big tunes from past few months include productions and remixes from the likes of Nick Curly, Yousef, Lee Foss, Hot Since 82, Solomun, Dennis Ferrer, Maceo Plex and Dusky. A really great mixtape. See you on the dancefloor.

The Hall of Shame

Friday, April 19th, 2013 at 7:44pm by Will Moreland

Cover your ears. Leave your taste at the door. And get ready to cringe ... It's time to step inside the Hall of Shame. And what is the the Hall of Shame, we hear you ask? It's a playlist that features 100 tracks – spanning well over 10 hours – of the worst cover songs of all time.

"They should have known better..." says bartjekokos, in his very perceptive playlist tagline. The SMP user has created the best worst mixtape you will hear this week. Which cover is the worst? Well, that is open to debate ...

Duran Duran – 991 is a Joke? So bad it's good. Vanilla Ice – Baby Got Back? A bad song done badly. Orgy – Blue Monday? Never – but never – touch a classic like Blue Monday. Bono – Hallelujah? Ladies and gentleman, we have a winner ... or loser, depending on how you look it. A nice idea, really well put together. Super mixtape.

Best Independent Music of 2013 (so far)

Thursday, April 18th, 2013 at 7:48pm by Will Moreland

The Orchard has pulled one out of the bag. Again. 2013 has been an absolute bumper year for new noise. With that in mind, one of our playlists of the week is a consummate collection of the best indie music released so far this year.

"It's hard to keep up with all the awesome indie releases out there," says the SMP superuser. "Well, you're in luck, because we've got you covered." They have indeed. Our highlights include everyone from the Virgins, Sebastian Back and the Story So Far to Leddra Chapman, Dirtyphonics and the Black Angels – and, of course, the inimitable Har Mar Superstar.

Click shuffle, hit play, turn it up and get ready to discover your new favourite band. Great stuff, as always, from the master mixtape maker that is the Orchard.

Best of Swedish House Music ever!

Thursday, April 18th, 2013 at 7:48pm by Will Moreland

So, you know we love Swedish pop music, right? Yeah, you do. Because we've never stop going on about it. It's Lykke Li this and Karin Dreijer Andersson that and Söderberg sisters the other. To mix things up a little, we're extolling the virtues of the country's house scene.

"The best tracks and remixes by the best Swedish house artists ever," goes Betty Beat's (what a really great username that is, by the way) tagline.

For such a small country, those Swedes certainly know their way around a mind-bending, arms-in-air, big-fat-smile-on-your-face dance music banger. Featured here: Swedish House Mafia, Avicii, Otto Knows, John Dahlback, Laidback Luke, Dada Life and many more besides. Enough to sell out any club, festival, stadium ... Play this one spine-shakingly loud!

Record Store Day – A Domino Playlist

Thursday, April 18th, 2013 at 7:48pm by Will Moreland

Who's excited for Record Store Day? ... You don't know what Record Store Day is? No worries. Allow us to enlighten you. Record Store Day began in 2007, when over 700 independent US stores joined forces to celebrate vinyl culture.

Realising what a great idea this is, the UK soon got involved and 2013 marks the sixth yearly event. Saturday, 20 April is the one day of the year all indie record stores come together with artists to celebrate music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of musicians across the globe make special appearances and give performances.

"This playlist," says SMP user Domino Records, "has brought together some of the most revered releases since it started back in 2008." You don't have to choose: you have digital AND physical!

Brooklyn Walkabout

Thursday, April 18th, 2013 at 7:48pm by Will Moreland

David Apichell has come up with really interesting idea for a series of mixtapes. With each playlist, the SMP user takes a musical stroll through some of America's most iconic areas. This time around, it's the turn of Brooklyn.

The most populous – and arguably the coolest – of New York City's five boroughs has inspired some truly incredible music. From Gomez, Jeffrey Lewis and Eleanor Friedberger comes the tracks Win Park Slope, Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror and Scenes from Bensonhurst. Add to that a healthy does of the New Transit Direction, Chelsea Wolfe, Shabazz the Disciple and Patrena Murray & the Ensemble and you've got a first-rate collection of music dedicate to the NYC district.

Great work from Apichell. Check out more from him on his profile page – including Walking through Manhattan.
