          The Soundtrack to May 2013

          Has the sun been shining where you are? If yes, you need a playlist that reflects summer's arrival. Step forward SMP superuser Phil Wilce. "The mercury is pushing 99," he says. "And at the burning heart, 50 of the hottest track you'll hear in the next 31 days."

          Wilce is our resident arbiter of taste, when it comes to new music. So when he recommends releases from Ghostpoet, Jakwob, Papa, Luke Sital-Singh and the Strypes, we tend to take note. And we think you should, too. The SMP user also recommends sun-blushed tunes from Empire Of The Sun, Alex Metric, Daft Punk, Jon Hopkins, Julio Bashmore and Justin Martin, with Dusky on the remix.

          We're also fond of new stuff from James Blake, Steve Mason and Kurt Vile, to name just a few. But this playlist is all killer and absolutely zero filler. The very definition of a must-hear mixtape!

          Gilles Peterson All Winners of 2013 #1

          It's that time of year, again: when the greatest show on radio gets even greater. We're talking about BBC Radio 6 Music's Gilles Peterson and his unmissable All Winners Show.

          Our highlights include: Cirrus, the return of Bonobo; Typesun's The PL, a slice of contemporary soul that is one of our favourite tracks of the year; the impossibly beautiful Green Garden by Laura Mvula; James Blake's collaboration with Wu-Tang's the RZA, Take a Fall for Me; the amazing Eckoclick Remix of Bambooman's Sun; and, well, pretty much every track on this mixtape ...

          25 tunes, spanning over three hours, of the best music from around the world – spanning every single genre that matters. Superb stuff from the tireless champion of new music that is Gilles Peterson. Many thanks to SMP user niniouz for putting this one together. A proper must-hear mixtape.

          When it comes to exercise, are you lacking inspiration? Devoid of motivation? Full of procrastination? Summer is well and truly on its way, and, if you're anything like us, you're probably starting to get more than a little bit concerned that your beach body is currently looking like more of a chunky carcass.

          Allow this collection of jogging-friendly tunes to prise you off the sofa, into your running shoes and onto the street. This mixtape, specially curated by the SMP team, features a selection of uptempo noise-mongers charged with keeping those legs moving long after your stupid brain tells them they're tired. Featured here: everyone from Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada and Skrillex to Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Katy perry.

          Singers Your Mom Will Love

          What on earth is that your listening to? It just sounds like noise, to me. Do they have to swear so much? Why is it so loud?

          Does any of this sound familiar? Yep, if your parents like the all of music you're listening to, then, chances are, the music you're listening to is not very good. However, there's always some middle ground – a place where artists who everyone can appreciate exist. Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams, Lenny Kravitz, Tom Jones, Joe Cocker – whether teenager or octogenarian, these are musicians we all enjoy. They all feature on this playlist.

          Alongside those artists are some proper mom singers – Michael Buble, Chris Isaak, Gary Barlow, John Mayer and their ilk. Here are 50 tracks – spanning almost six hours – of mother-friendly music.

          One man – an unsung hero, if you will – has had a hand in many of the most memorable and successful pop songs of recent years. You may not know his name, but you certainly know his music. Allow us to introduce you to Dr. Luke ...

          Or, more truthfully, allow Tim Cason to get your acquainted. The SMP user has put together this playlist tribute to Lukasz Sebastian Gottwald – the American songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist and remixer who has gone from lead guitarist in Saturday Night Live's house band to award-winning producer of the biggest names in music.

          A must-hear for fans of his work, and those who have never heard of him, this mixtape takes in tracks by everyone from Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Rihanna to Kesha, Jessie J and Marina and the Diamonds. A one-man hit factory, and the subject of a super playlist.

          "Hemlock Grove" Playlist

          So, who's into Hemlock Grove, then? The horror-thriller is the latest must-see television series for Netflix, and it makes for compulsive viewing.

          Based on the equally brilliant Brian McGreevy novel of the same name, released last year, Hemlock Grove premiered this month. Like House of cards, all 13 episodes were made available for online viewing ... Which, as we all know, is all but inviting you to draw the curtains, turn off your phone and forget the world exists until you've watched every last one.

          The soundtrack's pretty good, too. Studio13 has put together a collection of all the music featured in the show. "This playlist is continuously monitored," the SMP user says, "and will build up throughout the seasons as and when the music becomes available." A collection of tracks that's as eclectic as it is superb.

          RIP George Jones

          "I imagine the top speed for that old mower was five miles an hour," George Jones wrote in his memoir. "It might have taken an hour and a half or more for me to get to the liquor store, but get there I did."

          After a hefty bout on the booze, Jones' wife confiscated his car keys. She thought this would prevent him driving into town for more drink. Jones, with an equal mix of ingenuity and stupidity, "borrowed" a motorised lawn mower and drove himself to the nearest liquor store.

          The country star was far more than a prodigious drinker, of course. He was an immense talent – as this playlist, created by hoxsd1, proves. The SMP user's tribute showcases Jones' seminal career. A must-hear for fans and newcomers alike. A fitting tribute to George Jones, the king of honky-tonk, who died this week aged 81.

          Flavor Saver: Extraordinary Beach House

          It's about that time, isn't it? You've clocked off work. You've finished studying for the week. The house work can wait until Monday. Yep, we know the feeling. You're ready for the weekend – and we're more than happy to supply you with the soundtrack.

          We've noticed a change, recently, in the the tone of you dance music mixtapes. You guys are slowly moving away from deep, dark club music, and increasingly leaning towards soulful, piano-led, sun-blushed house music.

          A shining example of this come in the shape of Flavor Saver: Extraordinary Beach House, created by enangq82. The SMP user has put together a mixtape, "To match your favorite sunny beach flavors; look no further then this selection of the finest recent tracks in vocal house, soulful house, nu disco and funky deep house." You had us at "To". A great mixtape. Play loud!

          Who Is Harry Nilsson? A Bit of Everything...

          Who Is Harry Nilsson? asks SMP user Josh Edge. Thankfully, he also has the answer, too, and he's presented it in playlist form. Nilsson, he says, is "one of the most underrated pop stars of all time."

          Why? you may ask. Well, it turns out old Harry straddled the charts in the 70s – "thanks," Edge says, "to an elastic voice, an enthusiastic endorsement from the Beatles and a songwriting style that veered between baroque pop, psychedelic rock and Tin Pan Alley standards." We couldn't have put it better ourselves.

          The user's pithy and informative description is matched by the intriguing and entertaining playlist it describes. Here you'll find almost 100 tracks – lasting almost eight hours – by the artist who was, "Heavily sampled, heavily covered and heavily plagued by demons." Great stuff.
