Does a Duke box? I don’t know. What I do know is that there was a store not far from where I grew up in London (Wembley to be more precise) that sold old second hand juke boxes. Some of them had a neon light trim. They looked like characters from Dr.Who. At night I imagined they would all switch on and start playing records to eachother. Playing the music they wanted to play, not just the stuff that the humans put in their mechanical stomachs. I always wanted one of these juke boxes (along with a pinball machine and an original space invaders arcade machine). Well I never got one. They were too big and too expensive - and potentially scary. I also used to love going to Ed’s Diner on Washington St. in Hoboken, New Jersey, when I started working on my album and dropping 5cents in the little juke box on the table and waiting for my selection to spin. I could eat a grilled cheese sandwich and DJ at the same time!
Now I finally have my own juke box. Childhood dream fulfilled. My new juke box has more songs on it than all of the ones in the store put together. It’s called Spotify and it’s much smaller than the big shiny thing I once desired. Spotify is a little piece of software I downloaded for free and it runs on my MacBook. Spotify is what Napster and Pandora, amongst others, were getting at. It’s a bank of thousands, maybe millions, of popular (and unpopular) music that you can spin until your musiced (made that word up) out! You may have to listen to a couple of audio commercials for Jim’s Car Repair shop or the new Dust 3000 battery powered vacuum cleaner, but that’s how they pay for the luxury. Music like water. Music on tap. That’s Spotify.
With Spotify I can become a “sit-at-home-DJ”. You don’t need to tune in like a podcast. My DJ sets come in the shape of album length playlists that people can open in their own digital juke box on their computer. It’s like making my own compilation CD to share with lots of friends, except I don’t need to print labels and draw on loads of CDRs. Digital Mixtapes are where it’s at! I upload my digital mixtape (playlist) from the RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN to my LEFT SIDE OF THE BRAIN blog (located at my website GARYGO.TV) with a few words about the songs, and then hopefully whoever is interested to check them out, can devour the selected songs at their leisure. The songs I DJ aren’t really floor fillers, though some may be. They’re not necessarily to dance to, though some may be. They are songs that have been a part of my life in some way, that I want to share with people. They are from the RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN cause I have to think about them quite a bit when making them.
Sharemyplaylists.com is a kicking website because you can get to know people through their song selections. It’s a place to find different people’s playlists. Like the online meeting place of digital DJs and listeners. I think it’s an interesting way of getting to know people (through what they listen to) as well as hear new music and be reminded of songs you forgot you loved. Spot the future of music consumption. It’s called Spotify!
