Palestine, part of the Ottoman Empire until 1918, was occupied by Britain until 1948.

The Palestinians refused a UN plan to partition their homeland into a Jewish and a Palestinian state, but in 1948 the state of Israel was unilaterally established.

By 1949, the Nakba, or "catastrophe”, had resulted in the ethnic cleansing of two-thirds of the Palestinians and the occupation by Israelis of 78% of their land.

The West Bank and Gaza Strip - known today as the "Palestinian Occupied Territories" - have been under illegal Israeli military rule since 1967, when East Jerusalem was also annexed illegally.

For 60 years, the Palestinians have been denied the right to self-determination and statehood. Under UN Resolution 194, Palestinians have the right to return to their homes, but Israel has always refused this.

Today, over 6 million Palestinians live as refugees, many in overcrowded camps in the West Bank and Gaza.

Over 200 illegal Israeli settlements have been established in the OPT. In the West Bank, a ‘separation barrier’ cuts many Palestinian communities off from water supplies, hospitals and their agricultural land.

Both within Israel and in the OPT, Israel operates an overtly racist Apartheid system to the detriment of Palestinians.
