On 5 November 1605 a group of revolutionaries attempt to assassinate King James I of England. The plan was to explode 36 barrels of gunpowder in the cellars beneath the House of Lords while the King was at the State Opening of Parliament. Upon discovery of the plot and storming of the cellars, authorities found and arrested Guy Fawkes (also know as Guido Fawkes) who had experience with explosives and had been tasked with detonating the gunpowder. Fawkes, under torture, identifies the conspirators and the plot is foiled. When news of the attempted assassination became public, celebrations of the failure and the continued safety of the monarch spread across London. Since that time, 5 November, Guy Fawkes Day, has been celebrated with bonfires and fireworks. For this year’s celebration, a playlist for the Guy.
