L.P. recorded her first solo album in 2001. Titled Heart-Shaped Scar and released on Koch Records, L.P toured for four years and claims that she "got hooked on the road". Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol followed in 2004, as did a return to the road and a trip to music conference sxsw in 2006, where major labels began a bidding war over the singer, culminating in her signing by L.A.
