Featuring Art & Design by Otis Frizzell, the album features nine fresh phat tracks that span soul, dub, reggae, techno, blues flavors. The group's first major release was a live album, Live at the Matterhorn, a lengthy jam session recorded in a popular Wellington night club. Their first studio album, Based on a True Story was released in 2005. After only a day of release it had gone gold and was number one in the New Zealand album charts despite having little advertising or marketing.
The album's first single, "Wandering Eye", spent 17 weeks in the RIANZ Top 40 Singles Chart and peaked at number six. Freddy's dominated the 2005 New Zealand Music Awards, taking Best Group, Best Album, Best New Zealand Roots Group and the Peoples Choice Award. On December 18, 2005 the group were awarded the Worldwide "Album of the Year Award", as voted for by over 20,000 listeners of Gilles Peterson's BBC Radio 1 'Worldwide' show. They won three awards at the 2006 New Zealand Music Awards (18 October). ...show less
