David "Fathead" Newman (b. February 24, 1933) met Ray Charles (September 23, 1930 - June 10, 2004) at a gig in the early 1950s. There was an immediate bond between the two. In November of 1958, Newman released his first album, Ray Charles-Presenting David "Fathead" Newman (1959). The album features many collaborations between Newman and Charles.
