Aggrotech/Aggrotek, also referred to more recently as Terror EBM, Harsh EBM, or Hellektro is a subgenre of EBM that surfaced in the late 1990s.
Initially used in 1993 for advertising of the Technoclub event "Spirit of Electro" in Frankfurt/Main and referring to an American concert tour with bands such as Kevorkian Death Cycle in 1996, the term grew apart from its original meaning. By the end of the 1990s, it had begun to describe an evolution of electro-industrial and dark electro typified by somewhat harsh song structures, aggressive and generally uptempo beats with a strong influence of techno music, and lyrics of a militant, pessimistic or explicit nature.
