1976: Punk breaks, and in what seems like a matter of weeks, hair, trouser legs and album tracks all suddenly attain a reassuringly manageable brevity again. Despite leaving smears on our culture that remain as pervasive as big-bang radiation, however, punk quickly choked on its own exhaust and was dead as a creative force by the end of 1977.
"Mull Of Kintyre" was still hogging the top spot as 1978 began, and ended its reign as the biggest selling single in UK chart history.
Despite some sterling work from a handful of artists (The Jam, Elvis Costello, Buzzcocks etc) who were able to shake of the constraints of punk without reverting to self-indulgence, the real victors in 1978 were Travolta and Boney M, who, following on from McCartney, ensured that 1978 became the most successful year in the history of the pop single.
This list is free from both the punk survivors and the megastars listed above, however, and instead presents some of the lesser disco and AOR hits of the year whose presence then was barely noted by either the hip tastemakers or the wider public, but which still speak volumes about a remarkable year.
A lot of these records did become famous in the hands of others as the years passed, and in some ways they were victims of the power of the pop single in that unique year; it's an irony that if they were to shift the same numbers today that got them into the lower reaches of the charts then, they would all have hit number one with ease today.
